Whether as a student or as an instructor, I LOVE the sense of community that quickly develops when a group of individuals gets together to create.
THINSET - BEYOND ADHESION
As part of the workshop series taking place during the Mosaic Artists of Canada UNITY exhibition, I will be offering a "build-your-own-substrate" workshop.
WHEN: The class will run for two half days (9 am - 12 pm) on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14, 2025.
WHERE: The workshop will be held at the Neilson Park Creative Centre, at 56 Neilson Dr. in Toronto
COST: $195. The price includes all other materials, use of tools, and instructions.
DETAILS: In this workshop, you will learn to use Thinset mortar as a building material for creating your own one-of-a kind substrate. What does that mean? Essentially, you will learn to produce an undulated or folded base for your future mosaic project by simply using mesh and thinset mortar. Thinset is commonly used as an adhesive by mosaic artists for its many benefits, such as eliminating the need to grout, but when prepared properly, thinset can be used to create solid, interesting 3D substrates. So let your imagination run wild and fabricate some unique shapes that can be used for your next mosaic!
As a bonus, and to limit waste, you will learn a few tricks on how to use leftover thinset to create new tesserae.
You will take home one 5” X 5” substrate and one 3D substrate, and some thinset “tiles”. This course is beginner-friendly.
REGISTRATION: Click here to view the entire list of workshops and to register.
Registration is open until August 29th, but a minimum number of sign-ups is needed by August 14th.
